Couldn't wait for it to finish. Its the worst film I've seen in a long time; it was like the Alice in Wonderland version of David Copperfield, like being stuck in a bad dream. The scene with Copperfield & Hugh Lauries character when they fly a kite is utterly joyful. I left the cinema feeling lighter on my feet and feeling uplifted. Looking forward to this after the disappointment of Avenue 5s first episode…. David Copperfield was a white man and this is race bating nonsense and will lose.

I really think Charles Dickens' stories are better served by the mini-series format. Nevertheless I will see this film as soon as it becomes locally available. Addressing the elephant in the room, I do have to ruefully laugh a little at where we stand as a culture, regarding race/ethnicity. White actors portraying non-white characters is now (rightly) unacceptable but apparently, non-white actors in traditionally white roles seems to be becoming de rigueur. It's a funny old world. I wonder if we should go further with this this sort of approach to casting. Will we, for example, expand the roles available to women, especially women of color? If we dare, I could conceive of a sequel to Dolemite is My Name, starring Awkwafina in the title role.

Something seems a bit anachronistic about this version. My expectations were not high, but this film was most enjoyable. I felt that they had really captured the spirit (including the humour) of the novel. I thought it was also very courageous as they would inevitably get a lot of complaints about race etc (as you can see from the comments here) especially if they had made a poor film. As it was, they made an excellent film with excellent actors. Personally I wasn't bothered by the colour blind casting at all. Its an adaptation of the novel into a different medium and the whole thing has a slightly fairy tale quality about it: it isn't meant to be particularly realistic or a documentary. Also, there's been plenty of Macbeth set in an African tribe, Lear set in random fascist dictatorships, Romeo and Juliet set in 20th century America etc etc, and people don't keep whinging about it not being Elizabethan England.

Are we going to see Daniel Radcliffe cast as Martin Luther King Jr next. I don't really have a problem with them casting Dev Patel in this role. He's a good actor. But I feel like there should be some in-universe explanation as to why an Indian guy has Tilda Swinton as his aunt. David's dad dies at the very beggining of the book. Maybe some clever casting director could have found an actor with Patel's facial features and Swinton's colouring to play that brief role, then cast an Indian woman as David's mum. As it is, it's hard to buy into a film that barely makes an effort to buy into itself.

Its quite clear to me, from this review, that this is not an attempt to play the story as conceived by Dickens. It is based on the novel, but no more. All the moaners on here are making out that its a travesty for one reason or another of their own. If you want a version of the book as written there are plenty to choose from. Its pointless criticising Iannuccis film for what it isnt. Hes taken the story off at a tangent. Just like Gilliam (bless his cotton socks) has done with Don Quixote. Kermode has reviewed what he saw. Heaven knows theres no shortage of Dickenss work as written so spare us the criticism of this for not adding to the extant work.
